Alone for Christmas: The Best Way To Celebrate

Christmas is the most sought-after holiday of the year. It can also be the most dreaded season for many.

Some don't enjoy spending time with their family especially when the relationship is toxic or chaotic. Others just don't light up at the sound of cheery music or festive lights.

But 2020 has been a different year. It has mostly been isolating for many people. You may have been looking forward to this time to be with family. Or, this may also be your personal decision to spend Christmas alone, and you are interested to learn how to make this holiday more meaningful and enjoyable.

Joy and happiness are always accessible to us. The key is to set our mind on the right paradigm. Think of the things you adore about this time. Growing up, did you enjoy baking biscuits with your mum? Were decorations a tradition in your house? Did you all sit down to watch the Queen's Christmas message?

You don't have to do away with these things because you are without family this year. Choose the activities that make you the happiest the most. Life Coach, Ann Rice reminds us: "Don't focus on the deficits, focus on the positives – what you focus on expands."

Start The Celebration By Making A Plan

It may sound un-Christmasy to start the celebrations by making a plan. But establishing a personalised agenda for your holiday celebration is important. You won't have people bothering you with "what are you doing for the Christmas?" Often said with a pity.

Having a plan gives you control. It reminds you that this is your life and your time and you can do anything you want with it! Take a piece of paper and map out what you want to be doing for Christmas Day. Fill it up with activities from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed.

What happens here is, you will fill it up with all that you want to do. In so doing, you will look forward to the day instead of dreading it. Make it as magical as you possibly can. Being mindful of the food you want to eat or the music and movies you want to surround yourself with.

Squeeze In Some Exercise

It's crucial during the wintertime to get as much physical activity as you can. Breaking a sweat and stretching your muscles are beneficial on their own but they also help to achieve restful deep sleep.

Create an Ambiance

Scented candles, diffusers, festive lights. Go all out with the decorations, this time, you are doing it for yourself! Get your camera out, set the timer and give yourself a fun photoshoot.

Check-in with Someone

Even if you are rocking spending Christmas time alone, make sure to call loved ones. Inform them that you are spending it alone, and allow them to call you. When your mood dips, get on the phone and have your closest friend or sibling ready to cheer you.

And don't forget...

Always be grateful! It has been a difficult year for all of us. But for some, it has been tragic. Keep that in mind as you celebrate. Manifest joy and thanksgiving in your heart. Merry Christmas!
